Do’s and Don’ts of the Workplace for H-2B workers:

The H2B program is a great medium through which you can travel to the United States to temporarily work, live and experience a new culture. To make the most of this experience you may have to make some adjustments.

What is acceptable in your home country, may not be so in the US work environment and vice-versa.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to help prepare you for working in the USA.

Do

  • Always be punctual, this is extremely important to US employers, being late may lead to termination of your job by extension your work VISA.
  • It is important to smile and be approachable, especially in customer service-oriented businesses.
  • Be as effective and efficient as possible. For American businesses time is money, and workers are expected to have a strong work ethic. This goes right along with being to work on time.
  • Practice your English and communication skills as often as possible. This will help to avoid any misunderstandings that can occur with your employer or customers.
  • Allow yourself to embrace the experience, indulge in new foods, see new sights, try new activities and meet new people.

Now let’s look at some things you should avoid doing.

Don’t

  • Do not expect special treatment because you are from a different country. You are simply a ‘worker’ and you will be expected to work hard and within the policies and procedures of your job.
  • Do not steal, drinking on the job, drug use and disobeying employer rules. As these are all grounds for dismissal. If you lose your job you will have to leave the US.
  • Do not leave your job – you are expected to stay and work for the entire time stated on your contract (there are rare times when extenuating circumstances will justify your leaving your job).
  • Do not get a second job. This is very important. The conditions of your H-2B visa strictly prohibits you from doing this. You can only work for the employer that petitioned for you and is on your documentation.
  • Do not discriminate against anyone because of different races, religions, or sex.

Apply these tips and you should have a great time in the US, gain a ton of experience and confidence.

H2B Application Process

We have decided to provide an online application form as a method of applying for the H2B program with our agency. This ties into our efforts to modernize our operations while making the process easier for you, our applicants. We also project that this method will reduce processing time.

Below is an overview of the process here at Cape Cod Workers Program, from accessing our application form to arriving at your job in the USA.

  1. Visit our Instagram page @capecodja, the application link is in the bio. The application form can also be found on our website.
  2. The next step is to fill out the form accurately. Please note, the form also acts as an eligibility form which will indicate if you meet the requirements to participate in the program.
  3. Once it is determined that you are eligible, you will then need to fulfill the following requirements:
  • Proceed with completing the application form.
  • Submit an updated resume (please note the H2B program offers jobs in the tourism and hospitality industry and so your resume must reflect this.)
  1. Once you have submitted your resume, it will be reviewed then sent to the employer (in some cases you will be interviewed by the employer).
  2. A job offer will be sent to you if you were selected by the employer.
  3. You will then need to confirm your interest to the agency which will then be communicated to the employer (s).
  • Submit two (2) passport size photographs along with your updated passport (and expired passport if you have one).
  1. You will then be required to fill out the VISA application form in order to receive the DS160 document.
  2. This document (DS160) will be sent to the US embassy along with your passport and photographs to be processed.
  3. If you are successful in being granted a VISA your employer or agency will make the necessary travel arrangements.
